Northernmost Cape is a fragile ecosystem consisting of thousands of interlocking streams and tributaries. The water that surrounds the cape flows from Lake Superior through Lake Michigan and Lake Huron, and the Great Lakes are fed water from the island, fed by snow and storms, that flows through shallow underground streams and artesian aquifers. Protecting the water, the air, the filtering top soil, the beaches and forests is vital to preserving the environment and the lifestyles which visitors and locals cherish.
Northernmost Cape has several organizations working to keep the island pure and beautiful, including:
- Flow — For the Love of Water. flowforwater.org
- The Nature Conservancy
- Little Traverse Conservancy
- The Little Traverse Bay Band of Odawa Indians
- The Michigan DNR
- Sierra Club
- Little Traverse Conservancy
- Michigan Trails Council
- Michigan Water Trails
- Michigan Historic Preservation Network
